GTA 6 platforms: which consoles it is coming to

The short answer

GTA 6 is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. No PC version, no PS4 or Xbox One version, and no Nintendo Switch version has been announced.

That is the full list of what Rockstar has actually said. Everything else you might read about other platforms is speculation, not confirmed fact.

The two confirmed platforms

Rockstar’s own Newswire, the same post that set the release date and pre-order prices, names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the platforms for GTA 6. Both the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store list the game for pre-order right now, which is about as firm a confirmation as a platform announcement gets before launch.

Why there is no PS4 or Xbox One version

GTA 6 is built for the current generation of consoles. Rockstar has not released it for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, the generation before PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. This lines up with how big open-world games have generally moved: the jump in scale and detail Rockstar is aiming for is a big part of why the game targets newer hardware only.

It is worth being precise here. This is not a case of “wait and see.” Rockstar has confirmed the platforms it is releasing on, and PS4 and Xbox One are not on that list. That is a confirmed exclusion, not an open question.

PC: not announced, not the same as ruled out

This is the platform people ask about the most, and it is also the one most often reported inaccurately. The honest answer is that Rockstar has not announced a PC version of GTA 6 at all.

That means there is no PC release date, no PC price, and no PC system requirements anywhere official, because none of that exists yet. It does not necessarily mean a PC version will never happen. Rockstar’s past two games in this series, GTA IV and GTA V, both eventually came to PC after launching on consoles first. But that is a pattern from previous games, not a promise about this one. Nothing has been said about GTA 6 on PC, timing, price, or otherwise.

Be careful with any article, video, or forum post that gives a “GTA 6 PC release date.” As of now, no such date exists anywhere official.

Nintendo Switch: also not announced

The same applies to Nintendo Switch. Rockstar has said nothing about a Switch or Switch 2 version of GTA 6. There is no confirmation, and no denial either. It is simply outside anything Rockstar has talked about.

Given the scale Rockstar is building GTA 6 at, and the hardware gap between Switch and PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, most expectation around a Switch version is speculation rather than anything grounded in an announcement.

Confirmed versus not announced: the difference that matters

It helps to keep these two categories separate, because a lot of confusion online comes from blurring them together:

• Confirmed: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has said this directly, dated it, and opened pre-orders for it.
• Not confirmed, and not ruled out either: PC and Nintendo Switch. Nothing has been announced for either one. That is different from Rockstar saying no.
• Not coming: PS4 and Xbox One. These are the previous generation of PlayStation and Xbox, and GTA 6 is not built for them.

What is still not known

• Whether GTA 6 will ever come to PC, and if so, when
• Whether GTA 6 will ever come to a Nintendo platform
• Any system requirements for a platform beyond PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
